Kids today have a million things to do. Most parents offer them a huge array of activities to take part in. The latest craze is for bendaroos: a super strong, brightly colored string which can be used to decorate pretty much anything that comes to mind. Is it worth buying bendaroos for a few weeks peace and quiet? How many other activities have they given up on? And why do kids with so much stimulation get bored so easily?

Why does Pete moan when he has to go to hispiano lessons? Why does Sally hate the sight of her roller blades now? Why are Billy’s bendaroos laying on the floor. These children were very happy about these activities when they started off. What happened? Parents are often confused by the signals they get from their offspring. One day the kids are over the moon about the new ballet class and in just a few months they complain when it’s time to go.

The first thing a family should do when a child begins complaining about something they once enjoyed is to listen to what they have to say without prejudice. Do not jump into conclusions. Ask your
child what happens in the class. Find out what exactly is the cause of the problem. Then get their teacher’s take on the matter. Find out why they have got bored of a certain activity. Have they run out of things to do with their bendaroos. Perhaps you could suggest a way these bendaroos could be used that they hadn’t thought of and set their creativity and enthusiasm for bendaroos off again. Usually, when children start out on an activity they think it’s fun. Your child may feel stifled if the activity has too much structure too it. Let them find their own way to interact with the instrument, the activity or the bendaroos.

If you try everything you think of, and your child still resists that fantastic guitar classes or bendaroos, then it’s time to drop the subject. Don’t force the child, particularly when what they are doing is supposed to be fun. If they don’t want to play with the bendaroos, then they don’t want to play with the bendaroos.

The ivory-billed woodpecker is being sought high and low. Ornithologists are on a desperate hunt to locate one. The rest of us have more realistic aims. Many of us would love to have more birds in the garden even if they aren’t as elusive and sought after as the ivory billed woodpecker. Here are a few factors which will determine how many birds wind up in your garden.

The biggest factor in determining how many birds you will attract to your location is where you live.

Take a look in wildlife magazines to see which birds are in your geographic area right now.You could even local bird watchers if they can provide some information regarding which birds you can expect to find. Libraries will have books with useful information on migration, on the routes that some birds take in their migration which will affect which birds are in your area. Also, take photos of birds you see locally and compare them to bird spotting guides. It is certain that the birds you see will have much more in depth information on them than the ivory billed woodpecker does.

Put Water Out for Birds

Obviously, finding a source of water is important for birds. A bath or a pool, no matter whether it’s big or small or stone or plastic, will attract many bird families right away. You may attract even wild ducks and geese. Although attracting an ivory billed woodpecker might be hoping for a little too much.

Put Out Food

Find a place where birds can pick up some bread, bird seeds, or any other foodstuff they might like. Every bird, even the ivory billed woodpecker, has to feed some time. This will increase the possibility of them coming to your garden. Another option is to try corn. Particularly effective types of seeds that most birds prefer are sun-flower seeds. They are easy to find, and cheap as well. Certain birds prefer certain foods. Once you know the type of food the bird in your area likes, use that.

Follow these steps and you should have a garden buzzing with wildlife this summer. And if you do attract an ivory billed woodpecker, be sure to tell the scientists.

Sierra Hellemans is the five year old hula hooping diva. It’s embarrassing to be worse than a five year old at anything, so were all going to have to break out our hoops, oil up our hips and put these tips into action so we can be the next Sierra Hellemans.

Tip 1: Get a Hula Hoop to Suit Your Size

Sierra Hellemans gets away with using a child sized hula hoop because she’s five. If you’re not five, get a big hoop to go round that big gut of yours. Stand the hula hoop on it’s end. If it goes above your belly button, it’s the right size.

Tip 2: Don’t Move Your Hips in a Circle

It stands to reason that if the hoop is going in a circle, your hips should go in a circle as well. IT doesn’t work like that. Watch Sierra Hellemans. Sierra has the knack. She’s moving her hips from side to side. Alternatively, you could move your hips backwards and forwards. It’s easier to do this if you put one foot in front of the other rather than next to each other.

Tip 3: Practice

There’s only really one way to get as good as Sierra Hellemans and that’s to practice and practice. Put in the hours and your sure to be the next Sierra Hellemans.

Crazy Rasberry Ants are an absolute nightmare to get rid of. I wish I had the solution.

Crazy Rasberry ants are causing a wave of damage and untold problems for home owners in Texas and look set to spread their way across the Southern States. What can be done to stop them?

How to Kill Crazy Rasberry Ants

With the warm humid weather of summer fast approaching, the best advice is to act now before the problem gets even worse. However, killing crazy rasberry ants is a very tough task. Because they breed so fast, poison is not effective (particularly the over the counter poison). The poison does its job on the first wave of ants but after that, the ants simply walk on top of the other dead crazy rasberry ants. It’s also no use killing the queen. Each colony of crazy rasberry ants has a number of queens.

The only way to get some relief from the problem is to call in experienced exterminators who have access to stronger chemicals and will have more experience dealing with them. Even so, it will still be a challenge. Try to involve your neighbors in eradicating the ants. Unless the exterminators are working on their property as well, the infestation of crazy rasberry ants is likely to recur again sooner or later.

Pictures of Crazy Rasberry Ants show them to be smaller than regular ants (little larger than a flea) and reddish brown in color. Because of their slightly raspberry color, people often call them crazy raspberry ants. But the real name comes from Tom Rasberry, who was the first person to spot crazy rasberry ants in the Texas. The ‘crazy’ part of ‘crazy rasberry ants’ comes from their movement. They dance around in a seemingly random manner. Spin and darting all over the place with no clear direction or intention.

Crazy Rasberry Ants have become famed for eating electrical equipment from wiring, to TVs, to iPods. No one is quite sure why they do this.

What Makes Crazy Rasberry Ants Dangerous?

Their erratic behavior means that many people underestimate Crazy Rasberry Ants. But they don’t make that mistake too long. Crazy Rasberry Ants breed at a ferocious rate. Thousands upon thousands of them can appear overnight. Unlucky house owners that have found themselves with a crazy rasberry ant infestation end up shovelling them up by the thousands.

Crazy Rasberry Ants are so voracious and overwhelming that they are even displacing other types of ants. Fire ants, long the bane of many Texan’s summer, have been almost wiped out in some counties of Houston because they have been overwhelmed by the influx of crazy rasberry ants. This, at least, is some reason to thank them. Crazy rasberry ant bites are not harmful and don’t sting like fire ants do.

The best solution, as always, is to prevent a crazy rasberry ant infestation in the first place. Luckily, although their spread is relentless, it is quite slow. The most likely way to spread them is through soil and such from the Houston area. If you’ve had a delivery of soil or plant material from the Houston area and you think it might have been carrying crazy rasberry ants don’t delay. Get it checked out by an expert immediately. Your neighbors certainly won’t thank you if you’re the source of an outbreak of Crazy Rasberry Ants.

Solazyme is a brand new bio-fuel that looks set to revolutionize gas and how we travel. However, with gas prices rising and global warming advancing quickly, we can’t wait until Solazyme is available and working to maximize our fuel efficiency. So which cars can we drive to make sure that we are fuel efficient now?

Honda Insight Hybrid: Highest Efficiency
Highway: sixty-six miles to the gallon.
City: sixty miles to the gallon.

The Honda hybrid is top of the class with the highest fuel efficient in the United States. It has an electric motor with a 1.0 gas engine, the Insight has low resistance tires to add to its efficiency. Until Solazyme becomes a viable alternative, the Honda Insight Hybrid is the most efficient car around.

Hyundai Sonata: Most efficient Big Car
Highway: thirty four miles to the gallon.
City: twenty four miles to the gallon.

Large cars aren’t known for their fuel efficiency, but the Hyundai Sonata does a great job. Hyundai haven’t had the best reputation in the past but they are certainly heading the field in this division.

Toyota Prius Hybrid: Most Efficient Medium Size Car
Highway: sixty miles to the gallon.
City: fifty-one miles to the gallon.
(60 mpg city and 51 mpg highway)
The Prius is larger than the Honda Insight, so not quite as efficient overall but can carry more people (much more efficient than two vehicles when it’s full). The Prius is also more powerful with a 110 HP engine. The Prius is also more visually appealing. So if you want to be efficient and stylish until Solazyme comes along, choose a Prius.

Honda Civic Hybrid: Compact Car with Highest Efficiency
(49 mpg city and 51 mpg highway)
Highway: fifty one miles to the gallon.
City: forty-nine o the gallon.
The big selling point with the Honda Civic is its price: cheaper than any other hybrid car. It is just as powerful as the Prius so is a good alternative for those on a budget.

So make sure you are fuel efficient now, there’s no need to wait until Solazyme is available.

If you were watching Lost last night, you might have come across an ad for Octagon Global Recruiting. It turns out that Octagon Global Recruiting doesn’t actually exist and it’s a clever hoax advert for San Diego’s Comic-Con. But where does it rank against other internet hoaxes?

The Blair Witch Project
The Hoax: A website shows the recovered camera footage of three teens being stalked and attacked by ghosts.
The Truth: It was a promotion for a film. The website caused an internet phenomenon and the film was a massive success.
Comparison to Octagon Global Recruiting: No doubt the people behind Octagon Global Recruiting are praying for the same level of success. But the idea isn’t as new now as it was with Blair Witch.

Drivers License Search
The Hoax: People get an email telling them that their drivers license details can be seen by anyone online and they should go to the website and ask for it to be taken down.
The Truth: It was a prank.
Comparison to Octagon Global Recruiting: There is a whiff of collecting information under false pretenses about both Drivers License Search and Octagon Global Recruiting. There’s no reason to suspect that Drivers License Search did anything malicious with the information people put into their website. But is everyone who gives Octagon Global Recruiting their email address going to be happy about it?

Belgium Doesn’t Exist
The Hoax: Belgium is an international conspiracy propagated by the political left.
The Truth: It’s a joke.
Comparison to Octagon Global Recruiting: Belgium Doesn’t Exist is the site that amused me most and it’s a rather obvious hoax. Octagon Global Recruiting, on the other hand, isn’t laugh out loud funny and is actually plausible.

It’s always good to have a bit of hoax. Where would the internet be without them? They keep us on our toes and make us think carefully rather than just accepting what we’re told. Anyhoo, I’m off to sign up for Octagon Global Recruiting.

Heartburn and indigestion affect thousands upon thousands of people and make their life hugely uncomfortable. Problems with digestion could be caused by of eating too much, eating the wrong food or be connected to something deeper. But this is not incurable. Changing what you eat can help enormously.

Certain foods cause heartburn by acting upon your esophageal muscles so that they cannot keep out stomach acid. Avoiding foods that cause this reaction (like spicy foods) and replaced them with non-citrus fruits such as the Synsepalum Dulcificum.

Great foods to concentrate on are non-citrus fruits such as apples, grapes and Synsepalum Dulcificum. These are great ways of reducing acid reflux.

Sardoodledum: S-A-R-D-O-O-D-L-E-D-U-M

By now, you’ve probably seen the video of the poor kid who comes up against the word sardoodledum. First he breaks out laughing then he desperately tries to drill the asker for more information. Eventually, he manages to work his way towards the correct answer. So how do you succeed in a spelling be?

Prepare: There’s no substitute for hard work and preparation when it comes to spelling bees. The more time you spend studying, the better you’ll do. Try to set yourself a timetable of what preparation you’ll be doing when. For example, say you’ll revise the words sardoodledum to satellite on Thursday evening.

Check Pronunciation: Make sure you know how to pronounce each word you learn. Imagine if sardoodledum came up and you thought it was pronounced different. You wouldn’t recognise the word and would spell it wrong.

Pronounce words wrongly: Going against the last advice. Sometimes the way a word is pronounced is misleading. For example, for the word beautiful you could pronounce it bee-a-u-tiful in your head.

Learn about transliteration and assimilation: Get familiar with how words adapt when they move from one language to another. For example, sardoodledum is from French. How has the word been changed to make it fit English speakers better?

Read all the time: There’s nothing better for increasing your vocabulary and improving your spelling than reading. Once you’ve come across a word, it’s much easier to remember than it is to work out how it is spelled from the root and pronounciation. No doubt the boy in the clip had so much trouble because he had never before heard the word ’sardoodledum’.

Follow these tips and work hard and there’ll be no stopping when it comes to the next spelling bee. So now can you spell sardoodledum?

With Comcast Webmail being hacked last night, many people are now wondering how it is possible to keep your privacy on the net. Here are some top tips to make sure your private information is not compromised should something like the Comcast email hacking occure again.

Create a Strong Password

There are many methods online to do this. My favorite is to start with a memorable sentence. Then come up with a system to take letters from that sentence e.g. first letter from the first word, second letter from the second word etc. Choosing to capitalize one or more letters is good (if the word is a person’s name, capitalize that letter). And make sure your sentence has a number in it. Use that number rather than the letter of the number’s word. Creating a strong password like this will make it less likely that your email will be hacked as Comcast webmail was.

Keep Personal Emails on a Personal Computer

Avoid using computers at work or in public for private emails. Many companies monitor everything their employees do on the computer, and they are within your rights to do so. The best advice is to never write anything in an email at work that you wouldn’t say directly to your boss’s face. Who knows how many people using Comcast webmail are nervous about what their boss would say if all their email was made public.

Similarly, be careful what you write on internet cafe computers. It is possible for computers to log every key that is pressed. For example, if you were logging into you Comcast webmail account. The computer would remember your email address and password. This could be then picked up by a scammer who could then hack into your account.

Scan Your Computer Regularly

It is vital that you regularly scan your computer for viruses, trojan horses, malware or any other nasty bugs. There is plenty of software online that will do this for you. Removing these problems should be a priority for you as any computer left unprotected is vulnerable to all sorts of problems and attacks.

Follow these tips and you should be in a much better position if you find yourself compromised the way many people using Comcast webmail feel today.
