If you were watching Lost last night, you might have come across an ad for Octagon Global Recruiting. It turns out that Octagon Global Recruiting doesn’t actually exist and it’s a clever hoax advert for San Diego’s Comic-Con. But where does it rank against other internet hoaxes?

The Blair Witch Project
The Hoax: A website shows the recovered camera footage of three teens being stalked and attacked by ghosts.
The Truth: It was a promotion for a film. The website caused an internet phenomenon and the film was a massive success.
Comparison to Octagon Global Recruiting: No doubt the people behind Octagon Global Recruiting are praying for the same level of success. But the idea isn’t as new now as it was with Blair Witch.

Drivers License Search
The Hoax: People get an email telling them that their drivers license details can be seen by anyone online and they should go to the website and ask for it to be taken down.
The Truth: It was a prank.
Comparison to Octagon Global Recruiting: There is a whiff of collecting information under false pretenses about both Drivers License Search and Octagon Global Recruiting. There’s no reason to suspect that Drivers License Search did anything malicious with the information people put into their website. But is everyone who gives Octagon Global Recruiting their email address going to be happy about it?

Belgium Doesn’t Exist
The Hoax: Belgium is an international conspiracy propagated by the political left.
The Truth: It’s a joke.
Comparison to Octagon Global Recruiting: Belgium Doesn’t Exist is the site that amused me most and it’s a rather obvious hoax. Octagon Global Recruiting, on the other hand, isn’t laugh out loud funny and is actually plausible.

It’s always good to have a bit of hoax. Where would the internet be without them? They keep us on our toes and make us think carefully rather than just accepting what we’re told. Anyhoo, I’m off to sign up for Octagon Global Recruiting.

Although we do believe this has something to do with Comicon because the dates are the same. This looks to be another Lost related ARG (Alternate Reality Game). There have already been two others before this.

Dude, LOST has already done this before. They have made many other sites and put commercials on during lost. This isn’t new to the either.
